Joey Nolan is a PhD student in the Marine Biology program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and a graduate research assistant at the Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation in HRI, advised by Dr. Matt Streich. For his dissertation, Joey will research the movement ecology of blue marlin, black marlin, sailfish, and other pelagic fishes in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean through a collaboration with the Guy Harvey Foundation and Tropic Star Lodge in Panama. He is incredibly excited and grateful to be a part of a multidisciplinary research effort to study charismatic species in such a unique location with passionate collaborators. Beyond the work in Panama, he is also eager to contribute to the Sportfish Center’s mission to help understand and manage fish populations in the Gulf.

Joey achieved his master’s degree from the University of Georgia where he studied the movement ecology of Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon. He also spent time at Iowa State University as a research scientist studying the movement of invasive carps as well as Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute as a biological scientist researching sport and forage fish population dynamics.

When he’s not at work, Joey loves to spend time outdoors fishing and at the beach with his wife and dog and avidly follows Chicago sports teams.
